By Dennis Chung is recalling several models to replace valve tappets and camshafts. As of this writing, recalls have been announced in Japan, Canada and Australia; the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to announce a recall for the U.S. market but we expect to get one soon.
In Canada, the recall affects the Burgman 650, SFV650/Gladius, GSX650 and V-Strom 650 from model years 2013-2014 and the GSX1250F from model years 2014-2015. The Australian recall also covers the GSF650, GSR750 (known here as the GSX-S750) and GSF1250. In Japan, the affected models also affect the Skywave 250 (the local name for the Burgman models) and the Gladius 400.
According to Transport Canada, contamination may cause the surface of the valve tappets to peel, causing the inner part of the tappet to come in contact with the cam. This can cause both the tappet and cam to wear, increasing valve tappet clearance. If the clearance is large enough, the engine may produce abnormal noise and may stall.
Suzuki dealers will inspect recalled motorcycles and conduct necessary repairs. In Canada, vehicles with odometer readings of 4,000 km or greater (2,485 miles) will receive new valve tappets and camshafts if the clearances are greater than specification. For motorcycles with less mileage, dealers will replace both tappets and camshafts even if they are within the correct clearance specifications.
